Decomposing the Digital Preservation Problem with Patterns – Presentation at PALC-2019

Our paper entitled “Decomposing the Digital Preservation Problem with Patterns” was presented by Yannis Tzitzikas at the 25th Panhellenic Conference of Academic Libraries (PALC), at Rethymno, Crete on October 10, 2019.

The paper describes the concept of Digital Preservation Pattern and presents 14 such patterns, their interrelations, and a more general and more abstract pattern that covers the foregoing and is based on modern knowledge representation and reasoning techniques, as they have been identified and analyzed in our book “Cinderella’s Stick – A Fairytale for Digital Preservation“.

Το Στικάκι της Σταχτοπούτας: Ένα Παραμύθι για την Ψηφιακή Διατήρηση

Το βιβλίο αυτό αφορά το θέμα της Ψηφιακής Διατήρησης (Digital Preservation), πως δηλαδή το ψηφιακό περιεχόμενο που παράγουμε όλοι μας μπορεί να  διατηρηθεί προσβάσιμο και λειτουργικό, προστατευμένο από την απώλεια, τη φθορά και τις συνεχείς αλλαγές του υλικού και λογισμικού. Επειδή είναι ένα θέμα που αφορά όλο και περισσότερο τον κάθε πολίτη, το βιβλίο ευελπιστεί να μας ευαισθητοποιήσει επί του θέματος.

Η φόρμα του βιβλίου είναι πρωτότυπη και αντισυμβατική. Το βιβλίο επιχειρεί να εξηγήσει τα κύρια προβλήματα που σχετίζονται με την Ψηφιακή Διατήρηση (Digital Preservation) μέσω ενός .. παραμυθιού.  Συγκεκριμένα το βιβλίο δίνει μια σύγχρονη εκδοχή του γνωστού παραμυθιού της Σταχτοπούτας.  Ο ρόλος του παραμυθιού είναι διττός: να κεντρίσει το ενδιαφέρον του αναγνώστη, και να προσφέρει συνάμα συγκεκριμένα παραδείγματα επί των οποίων θα ξεδιπλωθεί ο σχετικός προβληματισμός και η τεχνική συζήτηση στα κεφάλαια που ακολουθούν.

Η δομή του βιβλίου είναι αρθρωτή:  κάθε κεφάλαιο αποτελείται από δύο μέρη: το επεισόδιο και το τεχνικό υπόβαθρο. Τα επεισόδια αφηγούνται την ιστορία με χρονολογική σειρά, ακριβώς όπως σε ένα παραμύθι. Κάθε επεισόδιο εγείρει ένα ή περισσότερα προβλήματα ψηφιακής διατήρησης, τα οποία αναλύονται στις ενότητες τεχνικού υπόβαθρου του κεφαλαίου. Για την ανάδειξη μιας γενικότερης και πιο αφηρημένης διατύπωσης αυτών των προβλημάτων, χρησιμοποιείται η έννοια του Προτύπου (Pattern). Κάθε πρότυπο έχει ένα όνομα, μια περίληψη του προβλήματος, μια αφήγηση που περιγράφει μια προσπάθεια επίλυσης του προβλήματος, μια εξήγηση για το τι θα μπορούσε να έχει γίνει για να αποφευχθεί ή να μετριαστεί αυτό το πρόβλημα, μερικά διδάγματα και τέλος μερικά ερωτήματα και ασκήσεις.

Το βιβλίο απευθύνεται σε εκείνους που θέλουν να κατανοήσουν τα προβλήματα που σχετίζονται με την ψηφιακή διατήρηση, ακόμη και αν δεν διαθέτουν το τεχνικό υπόβαθρο. Εξηγεί την τεχνική πλευρά σε εισαγωγικό κυρίως επίπεδο, παρέχει αναφορές στις βασικές προσεγγίσεις (ή λύσεις) που είναι διαθέσιμες σήμερα για την αντιμετώπιση των σχετικών προβλημάτων, και τέλος περιλαμβάνει και υλικό για τον αναγνώστη που θέλει να εμβαθύνει.

Ο παρόν ιστότοπος του βιβλίου (http://cinderella-stick.com), θα συντηρείται από τους συγγραφείς με σκοπό την ανάρτηση συμπληρωματικό υλικού, μεταξύ αυτού  και των περιεχομένων του “πραγματικού USB stick” της σύγχρονης Σταχτοπούτας.

This book explains the main problems related to digital preservation using examples based on a modern version of the well-known Cinderella fairy tale. Digital preservation is the endeavor to protect digital material against loss, corruption, hardware/software technology changes, and changes in the knowledge of the community.

The structure of the book is modular, with each chapter consisting of two parts: the episode and the technical background. The episodes narrate the story in chronological order, exactly as in a fairy tale. In addition to the story itself, each episode is related to one or more digital preservation problems, which are discussed in the technical background section of the chapter. To reveal a more general and abstract formulation of these problems, the notion of pattern is used. Each pattern has a name, a summary of the problem, a narrative describing an attempt to solve the problem, an explanation of what could have been done to avoid or alleviate this problem, some lessons learned, and lastly, links to related patterns discussed in other chapters.

The book is intended for anyone wanting to understand the problems related to digital preservation, even if they lack the technical background. It explains the technical details at an introductory level, provides references to the main approaches (or solutions) currently available for tackling related problems, and is rounded out by questions and exercises appropriate for computer engineers and scientists. In addition, the book’s website, maintained by the authors, presents the contents of Cinderella’s “real USB stick,” and includes links to various tools and updates.
